Lorry driver detained after ‘reckless’ driving chase in Kulim

KULIM: A 27-year-old lorry driver with a prior drug offence has been arrested following a high-speed police chase in Padang Serai.

He evaded arrest on Monday after driving recklessly during the pursuit.

He also tested positive for methamphetamine.

Police said the suspect was apprehended about 8pm yesterday during a raid at Kampung Sidam Kanan.

The incident, captured on closed-circuit television and widely shared online, showed the vehicle speeding through a residential area before crashing through the tent.

Kulim deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Tengku Mohd Faisal Tengku Yeng said the incident began at 9.45pm (on Monday), when a patrol unit spotted a man in a blue Perodua Kancil behaving suspiciously near a supermarket in Taman Serai Wangi.

Police tailed the suspect and attempted to stop the vehicle activating sirens and blue flashing lights, but the driver refused to comply and sped off towards Taman Lagenda.

“During the chase, the suspect drove recklessly through a residential area before crashing into a tent with tables and chairs set up outside a house, and continued fleeing towards Taman Mahsuri.

“He later collided with another vehicle at a junction and escaped towards Sungai Petani,” he said in a statement today.

Police said the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and was found in possession of 0.30g of suspected syabu at the time of his arrest.

Authorities also seized the Perodua Kancil and the drugs. The suspect has one prior record related to drug offences.

He has been remanded for four days until March 28 to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, as well the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
