Felcra subsidiaries axe Aidilfitri open houses amid ongoing Middle East conflict

KOTA BARU: All 16 Felcra Bhd subsidiaries have been told not to hold Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses and to postpone face-to-face meetings amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Felcra chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said the subsidiaries were, however, encouraged to hold their meetings online if the discussions were urgent or important.

He said the move was part of austerity measures in line with the call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for government-linked companies (GLCs) not to organise open houses this year.

“Felcra is also affected by the crisis, particularly in terms of revenue.

“The crisis has impacted the income of agencies under Felcra and as a cost-saving measure, all 16 active subsidiaries have been advised to conduct meetings online as I am concerned it may affect Felcra’s economic position,” he said.

The Kelantan Umno liaison committee chairman told this to reporters after attending a moreh session with local media practitioners here last night.

Jazlan said Felcra had yet to issue an official circular to all its subsidiaries on the matter.

At the same time, he said he had instructed all Umno division chiefs in the state not to organise Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house events.

“Kelantan Umno respects and supports the prime minister’s call, even though the directive was mainly for GLCs not to hold Hari Raya open houses.

“We understand the situation and are taking prudent spending measures,” he said.

On March 11, Anwar had said ministries, government agencies, and GLCs will not organise open houses this Aidilfitri as a precaution following escalating tensions in the Middle East.

He had said the decision was agreed upon during a cabinet meeting and was intended to promote greater prudence in government spending amid global economic uncertainty triggered by the ongoing conflict.
