Personnel rotation at border posts to be strengthened, says home minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry will improve the rotation of personnel stationed at border entry points to enhance security and prevent them from remaining too long in the same position.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said job rotation was already a standard practice, but its enforcement needed to be improved.
This follows the detention of a General Operations Force (GOF) personnel suspected of being involved in the shooting of the Bukit Kayu Hitam Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) commander last month.
“The ministry will take all necessary measures to enhance security and ensure the smooth operation at entry points.

“There are still personnel who remain in the same position for too long, and this needs to be reviewed immediately,” he told the New Straits Times.
Saifuddin said the case involving the GOF personnel had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah had said the suspect, a corporal in his 30s attached to the GOF border intelligence unit, was arrested on March 5 in connection with the shooting.
He said the suspect, who had served at the border for two years, was remanded for seven days to assist investigations.

Adzli said early investigations found the GOF intelligence personnel had close ties with members of a syndicate believed to be involved in the case.
The suspect also tested positive for ketamine, although he was not detained for drug offences but to assist investigations into the shooting.
The corporal was released on police bail on Wednesday after his remand ended.
On Feb 25, gunmen opened fire at Bukit Kayu Hitam MCBA commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir about 5.40am as he was driving near the entrance to Masjid Al Muhajirin, about one kilometre from the Malaysia-Thailand border.
Two suspects on a motorcycle fired two shots at the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
