KUALA LUMPUR: Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing continued to prove they have what it takes to challenge the world’s elite after upsetting world No. 18 Leo Rolly Carnando-Bagas Maulana in the second round of the Swiss Open on Thursday.

The world No. 27 Malaysians outlasted the third seeds from Indonesia 21-12, 21-23, 21-16 in a hard-fought 53-minute battle at the St Jakobshalle to reach their first World Tour quarter-final of the season.

It was Aaron-Khai Xing’s second major scalp in as many weeks after they stunned world No. 4 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the opening round of the All England last week.
Aaron-Khai Xing, the 2024 world junior champions, have been making steady progress since the second half of last year.

They captured the Syed Modi India International, a Super 300 event, for the biggest title of their senior careers before following it up with another triumph at the Guwahati Masters, a Super 100 tournament.

Their recent performances suggest they have taken their game up another level, having also defeated Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto-Rahmat Hidayat in the opening round on Wednesday.

Aaron-Khai Xing will next face Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard for a place in the semi-finals on Friday.

It will be the first meeting between the two pairs.

They are Malaysia’s sole survivors in the men’s doubles following the elimination of professionals Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong.

Azriyn-Wee Kiong went down 18-21, 21-19, 21-15 to Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul.

In women’s singles, world No. 37 Wong Ling Ching found Indonesia’s world No. 6 Putri Kusuma Wardani a class above as she lost 21-17, 21-15.

The defeat also dashed Ling Ching’s hopes of overtaking teammate K. Letshanaa as the nation’s top-ranked women’s singles player next week.

Letshanaa currently sits one place higher at No. 36, with Ling Ching needing at least a quarter-final finish to leapfrog her.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles challenge also came to an end after world No. 23 Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing fell 21-8, 21-11 to Indonesia’s world No. 10 pair Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu.
