Teen recounts horror as brother trapped in burning overturned car
KLUANG: The moment her sister-in-law slowed the car, 20-year-old Umi Qurratul Ain Salihin realised something was terribly wrong.
The overturned car ahead belonged to her brother, Mohd Nor Salihin, 37, whose vehicle collided with an excavator at Km70, Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang, near the a plantation on Monday night.
“I heard my sister-in-law scream, ‘My husband… my husband…’ I was shocked by her cries, immediately got out of the car, and ran to the scene, knocking on the driver’s door while calling for my brother,” Umi Qurratul said.
“We were driving back in two separate cars. My brother was with his two stepchildren, Nawwal Husna, 7, and Isyah Radiah Mohd Aizam, 10, while I was in the other car with my sister-in-law, Noradilah Abd Aziz, 34, and my mother, Siti Aisah Yusof, 63.

“Suddenly, my sister-in-law slowed down and spotted the accident. That’s when we realised it was my brother’s car,” she said.
Passers-by rushed to help, breaking car windows to rescue the two stepchildren and the brother.
“At first, only Nawwal Husna and Isyah Radiah could be pulled out. My brother was still trapped in the driver’s seat as flames grew.
“With the help of the public, he was finally freed. One of his legs was badly burned, so I held him in my arms,” Umi Qurratul said.
“My first trial was losing my father on Feb 8. Now my brother is gone. He was such a good man; after our father passed away, he fully took on the role of head of the family,” she said.

Umi Qurratul appealed to the public with dashcams to send footage via her Facebook account.
Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the accident occurred when the victim was unable to avoid a heavy vehicle on the same road.
He said the crash happened about midnight, causing the victim’s car to overturn on the roadside before catching fire.
