KUANTAN: A total of 62 police reports have been lodged nationwide following the circulation of a photo showing the Quran being desecrated on social media, state police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said.

He said the suspect’s remand, which ended on Feb 28, had been extended until Tuesday.

“Statements from 43 witnesses have been recorded to assist in the investigation.

“The investigation papers are expected to be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on March 2 (tomorrow) for further advice and instructions in accordance with Article 145 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 298 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He urged the public to refrain from speculation or making statements that could escalate tensions or disturb public order and religious sensitivities.

“The police conduct the investigation transparently, professionally and fairly, and will not compromise with anyone attempting to disturb the harmony and security of the nation.”

A social media post accompanied by an image went viral, alleging that a student from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) had stepped on the Quran.
