MACC must pair tough action with prevention to beat corruption – MCW

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must strike a balance between firm enforcement and preventive measures to ensure long-term effectiveness in the fight against corruption, says Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) founder and second vice-president Prof Datuk GP Doraisamy.
He said that while punitive measures through law enforcement and prosecution remained the MACC’s primary functions, non-punitive approaches were crucial to raising awareness and fostering integrity in society.
“Punitive action alone is not enough to eradicate corruption if it is not complemented by educational initiatives that shape an individual’s mindset and conscience. We need a balance. Enforcement brings offenders to justice, but that alone will not completely shut the door on corruption,” he said during a live broadcast of the Ruang Bicara programme on Bernama TV tonight.
Doraisamy said that preventive strategies, such as public education and awareness campaigns, were vital to developing a mature understanding of the detrimental effects of corruption.
Responding to claims that recent MACC actions were selective or politically motivated, he said the agency acted professionally and in accordance with international standards.

“Any firm action will inevitably provoke reactions. The public must consider these from a wider perspective rather than a narrow, emotional one. MACC is carrying out its mandate to combat corruption. Some parties may feel affected, but it is important for people to assess the matter objectively, without being swayed by provocations or agendas,” he added.
Doraisamy also urged politicians to familiarise themselves with corruption prevention measures and avoid exploiting enforcement issues for personal or political gain.
He said that MCW continued to serve as the eyes and ears for MACC by channeling information and complaints from the grassroots level.
“We have worked closely with MACC for many years. While we do not have executive powers, our role is to convey information from the community to the authorities, contributing collectively to the fight against corruption,” he added.
