Final farewell: Raub fire victims buried in single grave

RAUB: Grief hung heavy in the night air as hundreds of mourners gathered at the Kampung Pamah Kulat Muslim burial ground, where five family members who tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire were laid to rest.

The victims, who perished on the eighth day of Ramadan in Kampung Pamah Kulat, Ulu Dong, were buried together in a single grave.

They were identified as Mohd Alawi Muhammad, 56; his wife, Zaleha Adam@Ibrahim, 44; and their children – Ruby Adira Batrisya Mohd Alawi, 18; Ruby Adlina Banin, 14; and 10-year-old Ruby Azyan Barizah.

The bodies arrived in five hearses at the burial ground at 10.50pm.

The dark surroundings of the burial ground were brightened by spotlights and light bulbs installed for the burial.

A large crowd comprising family members, friends and villagers from nearby areas gathered at the burial ground, with many arriving on motorcycles after performing the tarawih prayers.

The couple’s 19-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son, who were at their respective hostels when the fire occurred, appeared composed as they sat surrounded by relatives during the funeral.

The victims’ bodies were laid to rest at 11.30pm, in the presence of more than 500 people.

Also present was Pahang Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal, who is also the Dong assemblyman.

Earlier, all the bodies were bathed and shrouded at the Raub Hospital before taken to the Tengku Abdullah Mosque in Kampung Pamah Kulat at 10.25pm, where the solat jenazah (funeral prayer) was performed.
