In 2019, then attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas hand-picked Wan Shaharuddin for the MACC post following a recommendation by former chief commissioner Latheefa Koya.

Among the major trials under Wan Shaharuddin’s watch is the corruption case involving former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, who is accused of soliciting and receiving bribes linked to the Penang undersea tunnel project. The trial is ongoing in the Sessions Court.

He is also the lead prosecutor in the case involving Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, which is pending judgment at the Federal Court.

The prosecution is appealing to reinstate a High Court decision that sentenced Syed Saddiq to seven years’ imprisonment, a RM10 million fine and two strokes of the rotan.

Wan Shaharuddin also led the prosecution in former Sabah minister Datuk Peter Anthony’s corruption case, which resulted in a jail sentence last year.
