Pas reaffirms commitment to PN after Samsuri takes helm

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas remains committed to strengthening Perikatan Nasional (PN) collectively and inclusively, while upholding the values of moderation and justice for all, in the interest of national stability and harmony, said its president, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi welcomed the trust placed in him by all PN component parties, which had agreed with his recommendation to appoint Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the coalition’s new chairman.

“Pas once again records its highest appreciation to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for all his contributions, service and dedication during his tenure leading PN.

“We remain committed to strengthening PN collectively and inclusively, while upholding the values of moderation and justice for all, in the interest of national stability and harmony,” he said in a Facebook post.

Samsuri, the Terengganu menteri besar and Pas vice-president, replaces Muhyiddin as PN chairman.

Muhyiddin has now been appointed PN deputy chairman.

PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision to appoint Samsuri was unanimous.

The chairmanship fell vacant following Muhyiddin’s resignation on Jan 1, after Pas leaders reportedly called on him to step down amid tensions between Bersatu and Pas over the Perlis menteri besar leadership crisis.

The impasse stemmed from allegations that Bersatu had plotted to remove Mohd Shukri Ramli and replace him with Abu Bakar Hamzah.

Muhyiddin had previously said that only a party president should assume the chairmanship, amid speculation that Pas was pushing for Samsuri to helm the coalition.
