Sabah flood victims surge to over 3,600

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims in Sabah has surged to 3,685 people from 1,593 families as of 8am today, a sharp increase from the 406 victims recorded yesterday afternoon.
The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee said 18 temporary relief centres are now operating across the affected districts of Pitas, Kota Marudu, and Paitan.
In Kota Marudu, the number of evacuees rose to 1,978 people from 925 families, compared to 290 people yesterday. They are currently sheltered at four relief centres.
In Pitas, the number of victims increased to 1,515 people from 593 families, up from 116 yesterday. Eight relief centres have been opened there to manage the influx.
In Paitan, 192 people from 75 families are seeking shelter at six temporary centres.

The committee noted that 30 villages in Pitas, 12 in Kota Marudu, and five in Paitan have been affected. All three districts were flooded at 6am yesterday following several days of continuous rain.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts morning rain in the Sabah interior, with possible thunderstorms expected later in the day.
