LANGKAWI: A house and a vehicle were destroyed in a fire that broke out shortly after the breaking of fast on the first day of Ramadan yesterday.

The 7.45pm incident occurred at the SMK Tunku Putra teacher’s quarters in Padang Matsirat. No casualties were reported.

Langkawi Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief Fire Superintendent Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani said an emergency call was received at 7.52pm.

LANGKAWI: A house and a vehicle were destroyed in a fire that broke out shortly after the breaking of fast on the first day of Ramadan yesterday.

The 7.45pm incident occurred at the SMK Tunku Putra teacher’s quarters in Padang Matsirat. No casualties were reported.

Langkawi Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief Fire Superintendent Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani said an emergency call was received at 7.52pm.

A fire engine from the Padang Matsirat Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene three minutes later, with assistance provided by the Langkawi station, he said in a statement tonight.

Zamri said the fire involved a single-storey Class A semi-detached teacher’s quarters covering 324 square metres.

The unit sustained about 20 per cent damage, while a Volkswagen Polo parked at the premises was 90 per cent destroyed.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 8.17pm.

Overhaul works were subsequently carried out to ensure no remaining sources of ignition were present at the site.

The operation ended at 10.01pm. The cause of the fire and the total value of losses are still under investigation.
