KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating a report lodged over an article published by Bloomberg that allegedly contains defamatory statements against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

In a statement, Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said they received the report today and had initiated investigations into the case.

The probe is being conducted by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (D5) under the Prosecution/Legal Division of Bukit Aman’s CID.

“The article titled ‘Malaysian anti-graft chief returns to stocks after outcry’, published on Feb 10, 2026, alleges that Tan Sri Azam Baki owns 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd,” Kumar said.

Investigations, he added, are being carried out under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Yesterday, Azam’s solicitors Zain Megat & Murad, in a statement, said the article was “libellous, irresponsible and seriously misleading” and had caused serious injury not only to Azam personally but also to the dignity and institutional integrity of the office of the anti-graft agency head.

It also confirmed that it had been instructed to commence legal action and to seek all available legal recourse, including claims for damages and other appropriate relief.

Bloomberg, however, said that it stands by its reporting after the MACC chief filed a RM100 million lawsuit against the international news outlet.
