Man sentenced to death for killing ex-girlfriend at Kota Kinabalu mall

KOTA KINABALU: A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of a salesgirl three years ago, after attacking her repeatedly with a knife at a shopping mall.

Judge Datuk Alexander Siew How Wai imposed the sentence on Chung King Fung @ Haider Daniel Chung Abdullah.

In delivering his judgment, the judge said this was not a crime of passion, contrary to the submission of the learned counsel.

This was a premeditated killing, with the accused having bought the knife used to stab the victim the day before, Siew said.

Chung admitted killing 21-year-old Nurul Ain Silien at a shop in a local shopping complex on 29 May 2023. He pleaded guilty on 9 February, the day his trial was due to begin.

“Yes, the accused was previously in a relationship with the victim and, according to learned counsel, had seen the victim with another man after the breakup,” Siew said.

“After the killing, the accused did not attempt to flee and called the police himself. He pleaded guilty on the day the trial was scheduled to commence. Learned counsel further submitted that the accused has elderly parents and a child and is remorseful,” said the judge.

Siew described the murder as premeditated, with the accused having purchased the knife the day before the attack.

“The sheer viciousness and brazenness of the killing is clear in the CCTV recordings. The accused repeatedly stabbed the victim from the side, then continued stabbing her at the back with great force, no less than eight times,” he said.

Lawyer Edward Paul represented Chung, while lawyer Jakariya Ab Jalil acted as watching brief counsel for the deceased’s family.
