UPSI student drowns during outing at Sungai Bernam

IPOH: A Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student drowned while swimming with two friends near the Teratak River View bridge at Sungai Bernam in Tanjong Malim today.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received a report on the incident involving Muhammad Afiq Aizat Muhd Shukri, 23, at 6.57pm.

“According to the victim’s friends, they were swept away by strong currents about 10m from the original location. The victim was carried towards a deeper section of the river, while the other two were swept to shallower waters and managed to save themselves.

“The victim was later brought to the riverbank by members of the public. Rescue personnel administered emergency aid at the scene before he was pronounced dead by a medical team from the Health Ministry,” he said in a statement tonight.

Sabarodzi added that the body has been handed over to the police for further action.
