A federal department director-general and a division director have been arrested over alleged abuse of power and submission of false claims involving funds from the Board of Land Surveyors Malaysia (LJT).

PUTRAJAYA: A federal department director-general and a division director have been arrested over alleged abuse of power and submission of false claims involving funds from the Board of Land Surveyors Malaysia (LJT).

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained both suspects at its headquarters here at about 10am today when they turned up to have their statements recorded.

Sources said preliminary investigations indicated that the main suspect had allegedly abused his position to secure approval for the use of LJT funds to finance matters outside the board’s mandate, including for purported personal interests.

Investigators are also probing allegations that documents and claims containing false particulars were submitted, involving hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

A remand application will be made at the Putrajaya magistrate’s court tomorrow to facilitate further investigations, including scrutiny of financial transactions and to determine whether additional offences were committed.

When contacted, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and said investigations were ongoing.

He did not rule out the possibility of further arrests if additional evidence and testimony emerge.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 and Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which relate to false claims and abuse of office or position for gratification.

Investigations are also being conducted under relevant provisions of the Penal Code pertaining to criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of property.

Further updates are expected following tomorrow’s remand proceedings.

It was previously reported that another government department director-general and a director were arrested by graft busters.
