Two minor blasts detected as firefighting continues at Muar peat fire

MUAR: Two small explosions were detected during firefighting operations at a peatland fire in a plantation owned by the Johor Farmers’ Organisation (PPNJ) at Batu 13/14, Air Itam, here.
As a precautionary measure, police sealed off the affected sector, coded Sector D.
The latest blast was detected yesterday in Sector D as the operation entered its eighth day, following a similar incident reported at the same sector on Feb 3.
Police believe both incidents were caused by underground peat fires that remain active beneath the surface.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the explosions.

“However, investigations were hampered by thick smoke and unstable, loose peat soil, restricting access to the area.
“The conditions made it difficult to identify the exact location of the explosions and to conduct a comprehensive investigation,” he said in a statement, adding that a blast was previously reported in the same sector on Feb 3.
Firefighting efforts have since shifted to aerial operations using helicopters to contain the blaze while minimising ground deployment, Raiz Mukhliz said.
Police will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates from time to time.
Members of the public have been advised to stay away from the area and comply with all instructions issued by authorities.

Earlier, Johor Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Norshuhada Amsari said an Agusta AW139 helicopter (9M-BOD) was deployed for water-bombing operations, focusing on Sector D, which is the largest affected area, estimated at 88 hectares.
Norshuhada said the fire spans four sectors: Sector A (10 hectares), Sector B (four hectares), Sector C (eight hectares) and Sector D (88 hectares).
