Tun Faisal: Hamzah, not Muhyiddin, should resign from Bersatu post

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has rejected calls for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down as the party’s president, saying instead that deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin should resign.

Tun Faisal said Hamzah had failed to carry out his duties as the party’s Sabah election director, citing Bersatu’s failure to win a single seat in the Sabah state election on Nov 29 last year.

He said this in response to comments by Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council member Yunus Nurdin, who urged Muhyiddin to relinquish the presidency to make way for Hamzah, following a dispute with Pas over allegations of an agreement to abolish the post of chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Tun Faisal accused Hamzah, who is the opposition leader, of failing to rein in his supporters within the party, resulting in repeated breaches of party discipline and the Bersatu constitution.

Although Tun Faisal did not name anyone, he is believed to be referring to disciplinary action taken against several leaders who were either sacked or suspended, including Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

“Instead of calling for Muhyiddin to step down, it’s better that Yunus should ask the deputy president to resign over his failures in carrying out his duties and responsibilities.

“Yunus himself should resign as Sabah Bersatu secretary, as he was part of the reason for our failure in the Sabah state election last November,” he said in a statement today.

Muhyiddin had claimed that Pas and Bersatu agreed to abolish the PN chairman’s post as part of a restructuring of the coalition, but Pas has denied that the matter was ever discussed.

Yunus had also accused Muhyiddin of making unilateral decisions for Bersatu, leading to a rift with Pas within PN.

However, Tun Faisal added that Muhyiddin had committed no wrongdoing and said that as a Bersatu leader, Yunus should understand the president’s executive authority to hold talks with his Pas counterpart, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

He said that discussions between Muhyiddin and Hadi on the restructuring of PN were still at the proposal stage and had not been finalised.
