Three children, including two siblings, found drowned in Sibu sewage pond

SIBU: Three children, including two siblings, were found drowned in a sewage pond near the Sibu Jaya apartments here today.

A Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre spokesman said they received a call about the incident at 4.03pm.

He said a team of eight personnel from the Sibu Jaya station was despatched to the location immediately after the call was received.

“Upon arrival, personnel were informed that three child victims — two girls and a boy — had fallen into the pond, which was about 2m deep.

“However, by the time firefighters arrived, all three had already been brought up to the edge of the pond by members of the public,” he said in a statement today.

The three unconscious victims were identified as Macx Devdynne Sharie Merdeka, 12; her 9-year-old younger sibling, Macx Welwait Merdeka; and Daniella Arissa Tayas Maringgai, 10.

“Paramedics from the Health Ministry who arrived at the scene confirmed that all three victims had died.

“The bodies were handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
