Suspected drug dealer dies, friend injured after crash during police pursuit

ALOR SETAR: A woman suspected of drug dealing died while her friend was seriously injured after the Perodua Myvi they were travelling in skidded off the road in front of the Land Office along Jalan Suka Menanti here during a police chase.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said the incident occurred at 8.20pm when officers were carrying out Op Gempur in the area.

He said police pursued the vehicle after noticing the two women acting suspiciously, before the crash occurred.

“One of the suspects died at the scene, while the other was seriously injured.

“Police also found a plastic packet containing a substance believed to be heroin weighing 210g,” he said when contacted by Berita Harian.

Syed Basri said the suspect, who was the 37-year-old driver, was seriously injured and investigations showed she had 12 previous druge-related offences.

“Her friend has three drug-related records and one criminal case. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The body has been sent to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and the injured suspect is being treated at the same hospital,” he said.
