MACC freezes RM1mil in accounts in DoE e-waste probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen a corporate account and an individual’s bank account involving funds totalling about RM1 million in connection with its latest investigation into the management of electronic waste (e-waste).

The probe involves the Department of Environment (DoE)’s director-general, deputy director-general and an assistant officer, as well as a civilian.

Sources said investigations by the MACC Investigation Division, which began on Jan 19, also led to the seizure of about RM170,000 in cash.

“So far, the MACC has frozen one corporate account with some RM700,000 and another individual account containing about RM300,000.

“At the same time, investigations are now focusing on alleged abuse of power and corruption involving the failure to take enforcement action against scheduled waste management companies suspected of engaging in illegal waste disposal activities,” sources said.
