E-waste blitz: 2 shipping agents targeted

PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) has identified two shipping agents for investigations in the crackdown on the smuggling of electronic waste (e-waste) and copper here.
Sources told the New Straits Times that this breakthrough came after the MCBA seized another six containers laden with e-waste here on Friday.
The source said two agents would be called up soon to facilitate further investigations, adding that the containers were also misdeclared when they were brought into the port.
Since the start of the crackdown last Tuesday, the MCBA has inspected 11 containers and seized 238 tonnes of illicit cargo.
It was also revealed that one of the containers linked to the latest seizure had been sitting in the port since 2024, raising concerns of attempts to exploit congestion and documentation loopholes to move illegal cargo through
the country’s busiest maritime gateway.

On Friday evening the MCBA intercepted another 158.1 tonnes of illegal e-waste and copper cargo, dealing a fresh blow to syndicates attempting to smuggle scheduled waste into the country
MCBA director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the multi-agency operation at Westports, led by Port Klang MCBA commander Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, saw nine containers physically inspected on Friday.
Six containers were found to be carrying items prohibited under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
“Among the seized cargo were containers loaded with circuit boards, industrial fuses and mixed copper materials classified as scheduled waste, weighing a combined 158.1 tonnes,” said Shuhaily.
Shuhaily said the containers carrying the e-waste had been placed in a secure holding area pending directives from the Selangor Environment Department and headquarters for re-export.

The coordinated crackdown involved personnel from the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Customs Department, Westports management, the Port Authority, the Environment Department and Sirim.
The crackdown has so far uncovered falsely declared containers shipped from the United States, South Korea, Spain and Taiwan.
Port Klang is one of the region’s busiest maritime hubs, processing about 15 million containers annually, or more than 41,000 a day.
