Sosma amendments to be tabled in next Dewan Rakyat session

KUALA LUMPUR: The draft amendments to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) will be tabled in Parliament in the next Dewan Rakyat session.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the amendments would be presented in Parliament once all stakeholder consultations were completed and cabinet approval obtained.
“This reform process is now at its final stage, involving detailed scrutiny by the Home Ministry, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and the police to finalise the proposed amendments.
“The draft is expected to be tabled in Parliament during the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament,” he said in a written reply posted on the Parliament website today.
He was responding to a question from RSN Rayer (PH–Jelutong), who asked when the government would implement the legal reforms to Sosma.
Saifuddin also stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Sosma reforms struck a balance between national security needs and the protection of human rights.
He said that any amendments approved by Parliament would come into effect after receiving the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the enforcement date being gazetted by the Home Minister.
