Man dies after more than 24 hours fighting for his life following assault

BUTTERWORTH: A man died after fighting for his life for more than 24 hours in hospital following an assault by a homeless man in an incident at the Kampung Jawa food court here.

Seberang Prai Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman said the victim, believed to be in his 60s, was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital here at 2.48am on Saturday after suffering several broken ribs as a result of being beaten by the suspect.

“However, the victim, who was also homeless, was confirmed dead at 7.30pm yesterday while receiving treatment at the hospital.

“A post-mortem examination conducted today found that the cause of death was coronary heart disease. The victim was also confirmed to have fractures to the ribs on the left side,” he said in a statement tonight.

Following the incident, Anuar said police arrested a homeless man, in his 40s, to assist with investigations.

“Checks found that the male suspect tested positive for drugs. The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code (for voluntarily causing grievous hurt),” he added.

Police urged those with information to assist investigations into the incident.
