Fire breaks out at Bukit Mertajam railway station timber storage area

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A fire broke out at an open timber storage facility at the Bukit Mertajam railway station here tonight.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of firefighting and rescue operations John Sagun Francis said a team was deployed to the scene after the department received an emergency call at 8.10pm.

He said the fire involved an open timber storage area.

“The estimated damage caused by the fire is about 30 per cent, and the blaze was fully brought under control at 8.24pm,” he said in a statement.

The fire was completely extinguished at 8.50pm, after which overhaul works were carried out.

Francis said the site was later handed over to the fire investigation team for further action, while the Post-Incident One-Stop Centre (PSPI) was also activated to collect information and provide advisory services.

“Police also provided assistance, and volunteer fire brigades were also involved in the operation.

“No injuries were reported,” he said.
