14 bank accounts frozen as probe into ‘Tan Sri’ deepens

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen 14 bank accounts as its probe into the alleged misappropriation of investment funds involving a prominent Tan Sri deepens.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the accounts were frozen following raids on five premises across the Klang Valley on Wednesday and Thursday.

“We are still awaiting feedback from the banks on the balances in these accounts. We expect to freeze more accounts,” he said.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that between 2021 and 2024, close to RM300 million was collected from about 1,700 investors for investments involving two companies.

However, checks found that the funds were allegedly diverted and spent for purposes other than those agreed upon in the investment agreements.

He also confirmed that two investigation papers have been opened.

Meanwhile, a source told the New Straits Times that the Tan Sri is believed to have used his position and influence to attract and convince investors to part with their money.

The Tan Sri is currently under a four-day remand, which ends tomorrow.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act for intending to deceive a principal with false claims.

The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of at least five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
