Driver who fled after hitting policeman arrested

IPOH: The driver who caused the death of a policeman in an accident along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, also known as Tiger Lane, here today has been arrested.

Ipoh district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said the 80-year-old retiree was detained at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division office of the Ipoh district police headquarters.

The elderly woman is believed to have fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the Perodua Myvi she was driving at the crash site.

“Initial screening tests conducted found that the elderly woman tested negative for drugs. The case will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Earlier, Corporal Mohd Hafizan Othman, 33, who was riding the motorcycle involved, was killed in the accident while on his way to work at Kampung Rapat police station.

The accident is believed to have occurred when the Perodua Myvi driven by the elderly woman, travelling from Jalan Lengkok Harimau, attempted to make a right turn at a prohibited area and collided with the victim, who was travelling along the correct lane.
