Man arrested after video of him caning, throwing a chair at children goes viral

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a 38-year-old man after a video showing him caning and throwing a chair at several children went viral.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsulmuddin Mamat said the incident occurred at a house here. The suspect is the uncle of the children, who are aged between eight and 11.
“The incident was believed to have been triggered by the children’s defiance of the suspect’s mother,” he said in a statement.
Shamsulmuddin said police arrested the man and seized several items to assist in the investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act. A remand application for the suspect will be made at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court today,” he said.
The section criminalises child abuse and carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a maximum RM50,000 fine.
