Bung Moktar freed of corruption, widow to face abetment charge

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has rejected representations filed by Datin Seri Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, the widow of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, to withdraw three graft charges over a RM150 million Felcra investment scheme 11 years ago.

However, the prosecution has withdrawn charges against Bung Moktar. In other words, the former Kinabatangan MP and Lanang assemblyman is acquitted posthumously.

The court fixed 5,6, and 12 March for Zizie to take the stand.

Sessions Court judge Rosli Ahmad also ordered the return of the RM100,000 bail paid to secure Bung Moktar’s court attendance.

On 3 May 2019, Bung Moktar was charged with two counts of bribery involving RM2.2 million and RM262,500, allegedly as an inducement to secure approval for Felcra’s investment in Public Mutual unit trusts.

He was accused of receiving bribes from Public Mutual investment agent Madhi Abdul Hamid via Zizie at Public Bank’s Taman Melawati branch on 12 and 19 June 2015.

He also faced a charge for corruptly receiving RM337,500 in cash from Public Mutual investment agent Norhaili Ahmad Mokhtar via a Public Ittikal Sequel Fund account registered under Zizie’s name.

The charge under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 carries a prison term of up to 20 years and a minimum fine of RM10,000 upon conviction.

Zizie faces three charges under Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009 for allegedly abetting Bung Moktar in the commission of the offences at the same places, dates and times, and is liable to the same penalty upon conviction.

Both Bung Moktar and Zizie were ordered to enter their defence on 18 November 2024. Bung Moktar concluded his testimony as a defence witness for two days in September last year.
