Teresa Kok lodges police report over fake article

KUALA LUMPUR: Seputeh member of parliament, Teresa Kok, has lodged a police report over the circulation of a fake article titled ‘Sijil halal untuk babi adalah wajar’ (Halal certificate for pigs is justified), which allegedly defamed her.

Kok said she had also filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“I was compelled to lodge a police report and notify MCMC because this article has gone viral on social media, and I have never made such a statement.

“This fake article has tarnished my reputation and portrays me as a provocateur of race and religion, which could jeopardise public harmony,” she said in a Facebook post after filing the report at the Sri Petaling Police Station today.

Kok said she first received the article via WhatsApp messages from several friends, complete with her photo and name, before learning that it had circulated widely on social media.

So far, she said, 18 Facebook accounts had been found sharing the defamatory and false article, while a Threads account under the name infra.gadget was also spreading it.

“I urge the police to investigate all social media account owners who shared this incendiary article and to take appropriate legal action,” she added.

Earlier, Kok denied the viral claim that she had commented on the supposed justification of halal certification for pigs, stressing that it was false and defamatory.

Meanwhile, Berita Harian group editor, Zulkifli Jalil, clarified that the viral headline had never been published on BH Online.

“The article’s headline was edited, manipulated, and altered from the original legitimate publication,” Zulkifli said.
