Selangor Sultan Issues Royal Decree To Take Strict Action Against LGBT Activities

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, has decreed that firm action be taken against any activities involving the organization of “Glamping with Pride,” scheduled for 17 and 18 January 2026, in Hulu Langat, Selangor, which is linked to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.

A joint statement by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and Sahibus Samahah Mufti Selangor said that the Sultan disagrees with any form of festivals, parades, activities, celebrations, or promotion of the LGBT lifestyle in any district within the state.

The Sultan also disagrees with the forming of any association, club, organisation, or non-governmental organisation (NGO) involved with the LGBT community in Selangor.

Further in the statement, the Selangor religious council and mufti said that any effort to normalise the LGBT lifestyle is in contradiction of the Maqasid Syariah (the objectives, purposes and wisdom behind Islamic law).

“Aside from that, any LGBT activities also invites normalisation of LGBT and it can be a threat to Muslim beliefs. This is because they are allowing what is clearly forbidden in Islam,” it said.

Earlier, an event that is allegedly organised for members of the LGBT community was scheduled to take place in Hulu Langat.

The event titled Glamping With Pride promoted itself with a poster on social media, offering activities such as campfire stories, a skit competition, and one activity called HIV Hunger Games.

A QR code was displayed on the poster as a method of registration and charges RM50 (except volunteers) for those who wish to participate.

The exact location of the venue however, was not stated on the promotional material.

Glamping With Pride is organised by pro-LGTBQ group Jejaka, which supports queer, gay and bisexual youth by creating a safe space for self-acceptance as well as peer support.

Event cancelled as organiser cites safety concerns

Jejaka posted a statement on Instagram today (13 January) announcing the cancellation of Glamping With Pride.

The group said the event will not proceed due to escalating safety concerns over the past few days.

It said that the venue owner had cancelled the booking for the event on safety grounds, and that they had received “credible and explicit threats” including death threats and references to violent acts directed at their organisation.

“We state this clearly: this programme was not cancelled because it was unlawful or otherwise, but because an environment was created in which reckless rhetoric, misinformation and fear-mongering made it unsafe for people to gather.

“Before the event was sensationalised, only 14 participants were registered. Over the course of a single weekend of hysteria, around 50 people expressed interest in joining what was, in reality, a small, private, health-focused community activity. Because of intimidation and threats, 50 people are now denied a safe opportunity to learn about health, well-being, and community care in Malaysia’s natural environment. This is the real cost of stigma and moral panic,” the statement said.
