Zahid: Akmal to announce his decision tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi met with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to discuss the latter’s future in the party and the state government.

Zahid said he offered advice and guidance for Akmal to consider, but declined to reveal details of their discussion at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

“The meeting has taken place. I have given the best advice, and Dr Muhamad Akmal will announce the outcome tomorrow,” he told reporters.

Rumours about Akmal’s potential resignation from his party and state posts have been circulating since last week.

Yesterday, Akmal, who is also the Merlimau assemblyman, said he would respect any decision made by Zahid and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh regarding the positions he is currently holding.

He noted that both leaders were responsible for his candidacy in the state elections and his appointment as Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee chairman.

Akmal had previously hinted at stepping down after his call for Umno to leave the unity government was met with a negative response from Zahid.
