Off-duty constable recalled for traffic op questioned over slapping incident

JOHOR BARU: The plain-clothes constable seen slapping a motorcyclist at a petrol station in Taman Perling on Jan 11 was an off-duty personnel recalled to assist in a traffic operation.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the policeman was called in by the Johor Baru North district police headquarters to assist in an operation against illegal street racing.

“The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it is believed the action was spontaneous after the motorcyclist allegedly attempted to flee when stopped,” he said at a press conference at the Johor police contingent headquarters today.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, and the motorcyclist lodged a police report on the same night.

“We will complete the investigation papers and refer them to Bukit Aman’s legal division before submitting them to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further instructions,” he said.

Police have recorded four statements, including from the constable and witnesses.

“We are also tracking down additional witnesses and obtaining closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the scene,” Ab Rahaman said.

The policeman, who is in his 20s and joined the force in 2022, has not been suspended or remanded.

He remains on duty but has been barred from operational tasks pending the outcome of the investigation.
