Netizens divided over influencer assaulted by tomyam restaurant employee

TAIPING: Police will summon two men allegedly involved in a scuffle at a tomyam restaurant here to determine the actual cause of the incident.

Taiping police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Nasir Ismail said the incident is believed to have occurred on Sunday at a tomyam restaurant in Air Kuning.

“So far, no police reports have been lodged by either party, and we understand that both sides have resolved the matter amicably.

“However, police will still summon both individuals to assist in investigations into the cause of the incident,” he said when contacted today.

The incident came to light after a video, originally livestreamed by social media user AR Habibi, went viral online. The footage showed a restaurant employee allegedly assaulting the influencer in front of his wife and child.

The video also showed the wife, other restaurant employees and customers intervening to stop the altercation, while the child appeared visibly shaken and distressed.

It is understood that the incident may have been triggered after the employee allegedly took offence at the influencer’s request to change a dish that was said to have been served incorrectly.

Netizens were divided in their reactions to the incident.

“Was there provocation before that? We must know the full story,” wrote user Mas Ayu in a repost of the livestream recording.

Another user, Farisya Mat Radzi, questioned why no police report had been lodged. “Why didn’t he (AR Habibi) report it to the police? This is evidence. The employee came over and punched him for no reason. If it were me, I don’t know what would have happened to that restaurant,” she said.

Others expressed sympathy for the influencer’s wife and child.

“I pity the baby and the mother. The husband is secondary. The child must be traumatised,” said user Shake Jamal.

Another user, Azizah Shahadan, wrote: “I feel sorry for the baby, crying in shock and fear. What kind of behaviour is this from adults? Why couldn’t it be settled amicably?”
