Woman denied entry into district police HQ over dress code violation

MELAKA – The incident involving a woman who was denied entry into the compound of a district police headquarters (IPD) here yesterday, which went viral on social media, occurred because she did not comply with the dress code set for government premises.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said at 5pm yesterday, the woman in her 20s arrived at the IPD with her mother, who is in her 50s, to lodge a report after they were involved in a road accident.

“However, the police officer on duty at the front gate asked them to return home and change into appropriate attire before lodging the report, as they did not sustain any injuries.

“The instruction is in line with the circular issued by the Chief Secretary to the Government on Dec 1, 2020, regarding improvements to customer relations management in the public sector,” he said in a statement today.

He said the woman and her mother later returned to the IPD dressed more appropriately and were allowed to enter to lodge their report at 5.40pm.

However, he said exceptions would be made for emergency cases requiring immediate police action, adding that the public is advised not to speculate.

It is understood that the women were involved in an accident while on their way back to Johor after attending an event in Kuala Lumpur. They were denied entry into the IPD as their skirts were shorter than knee length. – BERNAMA
