The authorities in Penang have launched search and rescue operations after two men fell into the sea in separate incidents.

GEORGE TOWN: The authorities are involved in two separate search and rescue (SAR) operations after two men were reported to have fallen into the sea in separate incidents on the Penang Bridge and in Butterworth today.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) John Sagun Francis said, in the latest incident, a man is feared drowned after reportedly falling from Km4 of the Penang Bridge, heading towards Prai, at 8.22pm.

He said a seven-member team from the Prai fire station arrived at the scene 10 minutes later.

“The NG999 emergency system alerted responders that the man had been armed with a sharp object and was threatening to jump.

“When firefighters arrived, the victim had already fallen into the waters below,” he said in a statement.

“A Yamaha LC V8 motorcycle and a mobile phone were found abandoned at the location.

“The Civil Defence Force and marine police teams later joined the search,” he said in a separate statement.

The SAR operation has been suspended due to poor visibility, bad weather and rough seas.

The operation will resume at 8am tomorrow.

John said the victim is believed to be a 46-year-old man, but his identity has not been confirmed.
