PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry will scrutinise the suggestion by a warfare and political analyst to establish a code of ethics for social media influencers.

Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin, to understand the rationale behind the suggestion.

“I intend to meet with the expert to try to understand the proposal in more detail,” he told reporters after the International Anti-Corruption Day (Hara) celebration, attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that although the government currently does not impose licensing or regulatory control over influencer activities, recent developments involving the inquest into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, have raised questions about reporting standards and social responsibility.

In this case, the official media were not allowed to cover the proceedings, while unaccredited influencers were given access.
