Number of evacuees rises to 2,112 as Kedah becomes 3rd flood-affected state

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah has become the latest state after Kelantan and Terengganu to be hit by floods, with 2,112 victims evacuated to temporary relief centres in the three states as of this morning.

The Kedah state disaster management committee said 225 victims from 66 families in Kulim have been placed at three temporary relief centres.

It said the evacuees are from the Sungai Seluang area, including Kampung Siam, Kampung Bukit Sarang Ayam, Kampung Paya Serdang, Kampung Titi Tok Aris and Kampung Padang Cina.

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees increased from 1,170 last night to 1,623 this morning, involving three districts that had been hit by continuous heavy rain since Friday.

The InfoBencana portal of the social welfare department (JKM) said 12 relief centres have been opened in Kota Bharu, Tumpat and Bachok.

In Terengganu, the flood situation eased this morning although 264 victims from 87 families are still being housed at a relief centre in Kuala Nerus, a slight drop from 276 last night.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm, heavy rain and strong wind warning for seven states up to 1pm today.

It said adverse weather conditions are expected in parts of Perak (Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim) and Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis and Raub).

Similar alerts were issued for Selangor (Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor), Negeri Sembilan (Port Dickson, Rembau and Tampin) Johor (Tangkak and Muar) and Melaka.

In Sabah, the affected areas include Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan) and Kudat.
