KL Mayor Maimunah to be redeployed to PETRONAS

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif is set to leave Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) earlier than expected after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to shorten her tenure by nine months to facilitate her move to a new role in PETRONAS.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said that her term, which was originally scheduled to run from Aug 15, 2024 to Aug 14, 2026, will now end on Nov 14, 2025.
According to the statement on Thursday (Nov 13), the decision was made to allow Maimunah to take up a senior post at a national GLC, where she is expected to spearhead projects to develop new landmarks in the capital.
In a statement, PETRONAS said Mainunah had been appointed as its property advisor, with effect from Nov 17.
According to a source, Mainmunah is believed to be tapped to oversee PETRONAS’ land-related matters, including the Bandar Malaysia project, due to her expertise as a town planner.

Her extensive background in urban planning and sustainable development, particularly from her years leading UN-Habitat, was cited as a key reason for the move.
Throughout her one-year tenure at the helm of DBKL, Maimunah was credited with strengthening governance, modernising service delivery and transforming financial management.
DBKL posted a current surplus of RM27.6mil in 2024, marking a dramatic turnaround compared with deficits of RM75.3mil in 2023 and RM283mil in 2022.
The Chief Secretary also highlighted her work in elevating Kuala Lumpur on the global stage through partnerships with UNICEF and the hosting of major Asean urban forums, as Malaysia prepares to chair Asean in 2025.
Maimunah introduced several sustainable city initiatives, including zero-carbon programmes, circular waste systems, green loop efforts and the Urban Climate Resilience Programme.

Her leadership has earned her various awards, including the Public Relations and Communication Association of Malaysia Leadership Award, Nona Superwoman Award, Best Local Authority Leader Award, and the Women Economic Forum’s “Women of the Decade” honour. She was also named a recipient of the 2025 Leadership Award from Fira de Barcelona at the World Smart City Expo.
Shamsul said the government was confident that her new placement would help ensure that Kuala Lumpur’s upcoming landmark developments are executed effectively and in line with Madani aspirations for the Federal Territory.
On behalf of the government, he also conveyed appreciation for her service and legacy at DBKL, and extended congratulations on her new appointment.
Maimunah, 64, has had a long and distinguished career in local government and urban planning. She made history in August last year when she became Kuala Lumpur’s 15th mayor and the first woman to helm the capital city.
She replaced Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh, whose tenure ended in August last year.
Meanwhile, there is talk that the next mayor of Kuala Lumpur may be Putrajaya Corporation president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud, although no formal announcement has been made.
