PETALING JAYA: Sabah Barisan Nasional will contest fewer seats at the coming state assembly elections than the 48 originally planned, state party chief Bung Moktar Radin said.

He did not say how many seats BN would not contest.

However, he said several seats were still subject to negotiations between Sabah BN and Pakatan Harapan, who had earlier agreed on an alliance for the elections.

Speaking in Sandakan, he said negotiations are in the final stage, with nearly 70% concluded.

He said he hoped to meet party leaders on Nov 3 or Nov 4 to resolve the matter, Bernama reported.

The delay in finalising the seat distribution was due to the two parties wanting to contest in certain areas, he said.

Yesterday, Sabah PKR set claim to the Gum-Gum and Karamunting seats, which are being eyed by BN (Umno) and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah respectively.

Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud said the party hopes to field an “Anwar Ibrahim representative” in the two seats, to champion the “reformasi” agenda advocated by the party and party leader Anwar.

Nominations for the elections will be held on Nov 15, with polling on Nov 29.
