Kedah police: 91pc of rape cases in state involving underage teens ‘consensual’, calls it a worrying trend

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — About 91 per cent of rape cases involving underage teenagers in Kedah stem from consensual sexual activity, police said.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said that from January to September this year, a total of 100 rape cases were recorded in the state, with 91 involving consensual encounters, Berita Harian reported today.
He described the trend as worrying and urged parents to play a more active role in addressing the issue.
“That is why I stress that we cannot stop tackling this problem.
“The police, the Kedah State Education Department (JPN), teachers and other agencies must work together in various ways to deal with it,” he told reporters after visiting Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Hosba here yesterday.

Adzli also advised parents to be more vigilant, especially when their teenage children go out late at night.
“If our children aged 13 or 15 are out at night, why aren’t parents asking where they’re going? Why aren’t we questioning it?
“We need to go back to the old days when the community minded each other’s business — when people looked out for one another and weren’t afraid to ask why someone’s child was out late.
“I believe that social problems such as rape can be reduced if we revive that sense of concern,” he said.

Adzli said that although police and schools have stepped up cooperation in recent weeks following a rise in school-related crimes and juvenile cases nationwide, parents must also do their part.
“Parents must monitor their children, especially their internet use, to prevent unwanted incidents linked to social problems,” he said.
He added that school liaison officers (PPS) have been assigned to monitor schools and foster closer cooperation.
“I have instructed the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) Unit to cover 30 school ‘hot spots’ in the state that are facing social issues.
“These 30 hot spot schools include both urban and rural boarding schools identified through intelligence and reports submitted to the JPN,” he said.
However, Adzli added that so far, there have been no reports of gangsterism activities in Kedah schools.
