PETALING JAYA: Eight men were arrested in Besut, Terengganu, to assist in an investigation into an alleged riot involving a businessman with a Datuk title.

Besut police chief Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said all suspects, aged 21 to 40, were arrested at the district police headquarters (IPD) after providing their statements last night, Harian Metro reported.

Azamuddin added that the suspects are on remand starting today to assist investigations opened for rioting and committing mischief.

He explained that a report was filed by a 36-year-old businessman, who is also the victim, over the rioting that happened around 1.32am yesterday.

According to the police report, the complainant went to the house of one of the suspects, who is a “Datuk”, in Jertih to discuss a misunderstanding that occurred around 11pm on Thursday.

Azamuddin said that the suspect then called upon his family members and once again called the complainant to enter the house, but was again refused.

“Chaos ensued as a struggle broke out between them, and the complainant’s phone was taken by one of the suspect’s family members.

“The complainant got a bruise on the back of his head, injured both of his elbows, his right finger and his back as he fell during the commotion,” Azamuddin said in a statement.
