Court allows contempt case against Shafie over Zara inquest comments

PETALING JAYA: The Kota Kinabalu coroner’s court has allowed the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ (AGC) application to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Warisan president Shafie Apdal over comments related to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir.
According to Utusan Malaysia, activist Che Muna Din, better known as Mona Din, will also face similar proceedings.
Shafie had reportedly questioned the length of time taken for the inquest at an event in Kinabatangan on Sept 20.
Following that, the AGC said it would not hesitate to commence contempt proceedings against Shafie if it is proven that his remarks had interfered with the inquest into Zara’s death.
On Sept 10, the AGC issued a similar notice to Mona Din over a Facebook post in which she questioned the testimony of forensic pathologist Dr Jessie Hiu from Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

On Aug 8, the AGC ordered that her remains be exhumed for a post-mortem before announcing an inquest into her death on Aug 13.
The inquest began on Sept 3 before coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan and is currently ongoing.
