‘Politically motivated’: Wan Saiful, Wan Fayhsal slam Bersatu’s disciplinary process

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Bersatu’s Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal today questioned the disciplinary process that led to their expulsion and suspension from the party, describing it as unjust and politically motivated.

Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, the duo said they only received official notification from the party’s disciplinary board late last night via WhatsApp.

“I can confirm that we received the letters around 10.45pm. The letters stated that the disciplinary board met on October 8 and decided to terminate my membership under Clause 9.1.4 of the party constitution,” said Wan Saiful, the Tasek Gelugor MP.

He said the letter did not specify the offence in detail, adding that both he and other affected members were “calm” because they believed they had done no wrong.

“We know we are on the side of truth. There are people using their power and position to suppress the truth,” he said, adding that he would study the decision before deciding whether to appeal.

Wan Saiful also said his expulsion does not fall under the anti-hopping law, as he did not voluntarily leave the party. He added that he is now considered an independent MP.

“I guess I’ll be moving seats in Parliament — small matter,” he said in jest.

“What matters is the process of reclaiming the party will continue.”

Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, who was suspended for one term, claimed that the disciplinary proceedings were flawed, saying two of the four board members had conflicts of interest.

“We had requested that the board be reconstituted because two members have family and professional ties with the current Bersatu leadership, clear conflicts of interest,” he said.

“I told them if those members were replaced, I would attend the hearing the same day. But that didn’t happen. When we were called before the board, even the complainant wasn’t present. So tell me, is this natural justice?”

Wan Fayhsal said he and his colleagues still loved the party but were disappointed by what he described as “something wrong happening inside Bersatu”.

“What happened to us is deeply disappointing. It weakens Perikatan Nasional at a time when we’re preparing for the Sabah state election and debating the national budget,” he said.

“I question the wisdom of rushing through justice, which, in this case, is injustice. But we will not back down. We will soldier on because we are still MPs with a mandate from the people. We will continue to speak truth to power.”

He also suggested that “certain individuals” within the party saw them as a threat.

“When you remove a person, it’s because that person is too dangerous for some individuals in the party,” he said.

Earlier today, Bersatu’s disciplinary board suspended Wan Fayhsal and expelled Wan Saiful, along with four division chiefs, over disciplinary breaches.

The four expelled division chiefs are from the Ipoh Timor, Hang Tuah Jaya, Ampang and Pengerang divisions.

It said that its decision was made independently and without external interference.

The board said that any Bersatu member found guilty of breaching party discipline and penalised has the right to appeal to the Appeals Board within 14 days.
