‘I thought it was stroke, but it was Influenza A’: Father shares frightening moment as daughter suffers carpopedal spasm during fever

What began as a mild fever turned into a terrifying ordeal for a father when his 19-year-old daughter suddenly experienced hand spasms that looked like a stroke.
Ahmad Syakir Mohamad Sazili, 47, recalled how his daughter, Hani Mastura, began experiencing severe joint pain and muscle cramps just hours after developing a fever, two days after returning to the International Islamic University Malaysia campus in Gombak.
“At first, Hani didn’t even have a fever. But after two days, she told me she was unwell and wanted to go to the clinic.

“I could only fetch her the next day because of work,” said Syakir, who works as a corporate communications director at a private university.
However, the situation worsened the following afternoon when he received a call from Hani.
“She was crying on the phone, saying her hands were cramping and the spasms were happening more often.
“When I picked her up, she could still walk. But once she got into the car, her whole body started trembling,” he said.

“At first, Hani didn’t even have a fever. But after two days, she told me she was unwell and wanted to go to the clinic.
At first, Syakir thought she was cold from the air conditioning, but he quickly realised the situation was serious when she began groaning in pain.
He said her fingers had curled up, just like someone who is having a stroke.
Panicking, Syakir decided to skip the nearby clinic and rushed her straight to the emergency unit of a private medical centre in Kajang.

He said the sight of his daughter’s hands twisting and her inability to move her fingers reminded him of his late father, who had suffered a stroke.
Diagnosed with Influenza A
After half an hour of emergency treatment, Hani’s condition stabilised.
Doctors later confirmed that she suffered from carpopedal spasm, a muscle contraction often linked to anxiety, not stroke.
Laboratory tests also confirmed she was positive for Influenza A.
Hani was admitted for three days before being discharged and has since made a full recovery at the family’s home in Bandar Baru Bangi.
The incident served as a wake-up call for Syakir and his wife, Khuraisah Mohd Nasir, to take influenza symptoms more seriously.
Syakir said he was surprised by how different Hani’s case was compared to her younger sister’s who had also contracted Influenza A three weeks earlier but only showed mild symptoms.
Following the incident, the family decided to get vaccinated against influenza and to be extra cautious whenever any of their children show early signs of illness.
“We’ve told our kids to keep their distance from friends who are sick and to avoid sharing food or drinks.
“Influenza may seem like an ordinary fever, but its impact can vary greatly between individuals,” he said.
Syakir urged parents not to delay seeking medical attention if their children show fever or flu-like symptoms, warning that even a day’s delay could lead to serious complications.
He also reminded parents to act responsibly by ensuring their children do not return to school or university while still unwell, to prevent spreading the virus to others.
