Police appeal for witnesses following fatal car blaze

BUTTERWORTH: Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal car accident early this morning in which two people died after their vehicle caught fire.
Officers were alerted to the crash at 7.30am on Jalan Permatang Baru, where a Proton Saga, believed to be travelling from Permatang Tiga towards Sungai Dua, lost control and collided with a pile of soil on the roadside.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman said the impact caused the vehicle to ignite.
Anuar said that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact the district’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department at 04-5757946, or report to the nearest police station.
It was reported earlier that the two people were killed when their car erupted in flames following the collision.
The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 7.09am and dispatched a team from the Butterworth station. About 80 per cent of the vehicle was destroyed in the fire.
