Israel put half of Malaysian GSF volunteers on trial without lawyers

SEPANG: Israel has put half of the Malaysian Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) volunteers abducted on Thursday on trial without their lawyers present, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has revealed.
He said this when providing an update on the 23 Malaysians detained by Israel on Thursday.
At a press conference, Mohamad said lawyers from the Legal Centre for Arab Minority Rights in Israel (Adalah), who have been on standby to provide legal representation for Malaysians, protested against this.
He hopes the remaining Malaysians will be tried with lawyers present on Monday.

Mohamad said the government previously informed the volunteers to sign deportation letters to facilitate their deportation in the event of their arrest.
“The government is monitoring their condition, though communication is currently cut off.
“This (communication cut off) is why Malaysian participants were briefed carefully, to avoid any provocation that could worsen the situation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) director-general and spokesperson, Datuk Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim, said that the lawyers had been able to consult with the Malaysian volunteers once.
However, they were prevented from having a second meeting.

“SNCC has been informed that in the past 24 hours, some Malaysians were still denied access,” he said.
Sani said that SNCC has received reports that a total of 462 participants are in Israeli detention, with only four being freed so far.
“This leaves 458 still detained,” he added.
