PETALING JAYA: Selangor Bersatu deputy chief Rafiq Abdullah has accused Wan Saiful Wan Jan of deceiving several division leaders into attending his press conference yesterday.

According to Rafiq, the leaders were told the press conference would only focus on statutory declarations (SDs). However, they were shocked when it turned into a personal attack on party secretary-general Azmin Ali.

“I called most of the division chiefs who attended yesterday. They were shocked, because they only went to the press conference after Wan Saiful told them he wanted to explain matters regarding the SDs.

“That was why they showed up – he said it was about the SDs. Suddenly, it became a personal attack on Azmin. What is going on?” he told FMT.

Wan Saiful’s press conference was held after the Supreme Council member was summoned by the party’s disciplinary board for allegedly collecting SDs to push for deputy president Hamzah Zainudin to replace president Muhyiddin Yassin. That hearing, however, has been postponed.

At the press conference, Wan Saiful claimed the SDs – signed by himself and 119 division chiefs ahead of Bersatu’s annual general assembly (AGM) on Sept 9 – were related to the issue of the party’s prime minister candidate.

Wan Saiful, who is Tasek Gelugor MP, had said that the matter could not be discussed openly at the AGM due to its sensitivity.

He further insisted that the SDs they had signed were not the same as the version that went viral online, which allegedly included conditions that “the president must continue to lead” and contained “not a single line rejecting Muhyiddin’s leadership”.

Wan Saiful also alleged that during a meeting with Azmin on Aug 19, two division chiefs, Suhaimi Ghazali and Shukri Mustafa, were threatened that they would not be selected as election candidates unless they withdrew their SDs said to be aimed at toppling Muhyiddin.

He went on to claim that Azmin was unfit to be a Bersatu leader as long as the controversy surrounding a leaked explicit video allegedly of him remained unresolved.

Rafiq, however, accused Wan Saiful of lying about the contents of the SDs, which he claimed were falsely presented as supporting Muhyiddin.

“If the SDs were truly in support of the president, why were there only 120 signatures? And why didn’t he send the SD to me and the Selangor assemblymen?

“If you’re making an SD to support the president, there’s actually no need to do so because we already support the president,” he said.

On Wan Saiful’s attacks against Azmin, Rafiq said he had crossed the line by tarnishing the image of a party leader without solid evidence, especially when both the police and the attorney-general had already issued statements on the matter.

He called for immediate disciplinary action against Wan Saiful to resolve the ongoing turmoil.
