KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized a vehicle and opened an investigation after a foreign tourist was reportedly overcharged by a driver at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the incident, which went viral on social media two days ago, involved a tourist who was initially quoted RM60 for a ride but was allegedly forced to pay RM800 before being allowed to exit the vehicle.

“Following the viral post, I instructed JPJ to track down the vehicle,” Loke wrote on his Facebook page.

He added that a covert operation at KLIA yesterday led to the successful apprehension of the vehicle and its driver.

“The car was immediately impounded and a police report has been lodged for further action,” he said.

Loke praised the swift action of JPJ and reiterated the ministry’s zero-tolerance stance against unscrupulous drivers, warning that such behaviour tarnishes the country’s image.

“Congratulations and thank you to JPJ for the prompt action. The Ministry of Transport will not compromise with ‘ulat-ulat’ (rogue drivers) who damage the nation’s reputation,” he said.
