Johari Abdul Ghani to take charge of Kampung Sungai Baru eviction clash that wounded senior KL cop

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has been tasked to probe the Kampung Sungai Baru eviction, which saw a police officer injured during a court-ordered demolition.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the investigation will follow the law and expressed concern over the scuffle that left Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman with a head injury, The Star reported today.

“The eviction was done after notices were issued a long time ago. I will ask the Titiwangsa MP, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, to investigate this issue as soon as possible.

“Even though Umno had agreed to hold a convention on the proposed Urban Renewal Act, we will take the necessary actions allowed under the laws.

“There should not have been violence during the eviction process, which caused the Dang Wangi OCPD to be hurt. I also sympathise with the victims of the eviction,” Ahmad Zahid was quoted as telling reporters here.

Police blocked entry points and told the remaining Kampung Sungai Baru residents to leave by noon during the court-ordered operation, which involved disconnecting electricity and demolishing several homes.

Sulizmie was injured when a rock, thrown in the commotion, struck him on the head.

The eviction stems from a redevelopment plan first proposed in 2016 to replace PKNS flats and terrace houses with a high-rise mixed development.

Most flat dwellers agreed but several terrace house owners opposed the plan, prompting delays.

The developer eventually invoked the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to acquire the land.
